Athens has a hot-summer Mediterranean climate, and its pollen calendar is front-loaded: almost everything happens between the first warm days of February and the onset of drought in early July. Cypress and other Cupressaceae open the year, shedding heavily from January into March from hillside plantings, cemeteries and the slopes of Hymettus, Parnitha and Lycabettus. Plane trees, the classic shade tree of the National Garden, Zappeion and countless squares, follow in late March and April, when pine also coats cars in yellow dust that looks dramatic but rarely triggers allergy. The peak is olive, flowering in May and drifting in from the groves of the Mesogeia plain around Spata and Markopoulo and from the old Elaionas land to the west. Grasses overlap through April to June, strongest on the dry margins of Pedion tou Areos, Filopappou and Ardittos. Pellitory (Parietaria), growing from walls and pavement cracks all over the dense inner districts, has an unusually long season and can prolong symptoms into autumn. The Attica basin's mountain rim traps pollen on still days; the afternoon sea breeze off the Saronic Gulf brings relief.

• Keep windows shut through the middle of the day in May and open up later, once the afternoon breeze off the Saronic Gulf has come in and cleared the basin.
• If you are sensitive to olive, plan weekend trips toward the coast or islands rather than out to the Mesogeia and Spata area during May.
• Because pellitory grows straight out of walls and pavements in Kypseli, Exarchia and Pangrati, symptoms that continue past July are worth discussing with a pharmacist or allergist rather than assuming the season is over.
