Birch pollen today

Birch pollen is not high anywhere we track today. Season runs March to May, peaking in April.

Birch is the dominant tree allergen across northern and central Europe. Its season is short and intense — often just two to three brutal weeks — and its grains are light enough to travel hundreds of kilometres, so a city with few birches can still record high counts.

Common questions

When is birch pollen season?

Birch pollen runs from March into May, peaking in April across central Europe and extending into late May in Scandinavia.

Why does birch pollen make some fruit itch?

The main birch protein closely resembles proteins in raw apple, cherry, hazelnut and carrot, so the immune system can react to the food as though it were pollen. It is called oral allergy syndrome, and cooking usually breaks the protein down.

Can birch pollen travel from other countries?

Yes. Birch grains are light and can drift hundreds of kilometres, which is why symptoms sometimes begin before local trees flower.
