Pollen Season in Zagreb

Zagreb sits in the Sava basin at the foot of Medvednica, with a humid continental climate — cold, often foggy winters and hot, humid summers — that compresses the tree season into a sharp spring burst. Hazel and alder can release pollen in mild spells as early as February, followed by ash, poplar and willow along the Sava, then birch and hornbeam through April, when tree pollen is at its most intense. The London planes lining Zrinjevac and the other squares of the Lenuci Horseshoe add their pollen and irritating leaf hairs in the same weeks. Grasses take over from May and peak in June on the meadows around Jarun and Bundek, along the Sava embankment and in the open parts of Maksimir, fading through late July. The distinctly Pannonian feature is ragweed: Ambrosia is widespread across Croatia's continental lowlands and colonises roadsides, railway land, building plots and untended riverbank strips, driving a second hard peak from mid-August until the first frosts. Mugwort adds to July and August. Wooded Sljeme runs a week or two behind the city centre.

• Ragweed and grasses shed most pollen in the morning, so shift runs and cycling on the Sava embankment, Jarun or Bundek to the evening, ideally after rain.
• Keep windows shut on warm, breezy afternoons in April and late August and air the flat late at night, when counts over the city drop.
• If your symptoms start in August rather than spring, ask a pharmacist or your doctor about testing for ragweed specifically, since it is the dominant late-summer allergen in the Zagreb area.
