Pollen Season in Frankfurt

Frankfurt sits in the Rhine-Main basin, one of the mildest and earliest-warming corners of Germany, sheltered by the Taunus to the northwest. That warmth pulls the season forward: hazel and alder often release pollen in January or February, and a mild spell at the turn of the year can start things even sooner. Birch is the dominant spring allergen, building through April and usually fading by mid-May, and it is heavy wherever the city's parks and street trees cluster — Grüneburgpark, Günthersburgpark, the Niddapark meadows and the residential streets of Nordend and Bornheim. Plane trees along the Wallanlagen and the Mainkai add a shorter, dustier April irritation. Grasses take over from May into July and are worst on the open meadows of the Niddapark, Ostpark, Lohrberg and the Main embankments, with cereal pollen drifting in from the farmland of the Wetterau and the wider Rhine-Main plain. The Frankfurter Stadtwald to the south keeps tree pollen circulating in the city's air. Mugwort follows in late summer, and ragweed occurs sporadically in the Upper Rhine region.

• Frankfurt's season starts unusually early, so if hazel or alder affect you, begin checking counts in January rather than waiting for spring.
• Swap riverside runs along the Main and laps of the Niddapark meadows for early morning or after rain during May and June, when grass pollen peaks there.
• On high-birch April days, keep windows shut in the afternoon and evening in leafy Nordend and Bornheim, and air out rooms at night or just after a downpour instead.
