Pollen Season in Zurich

Zurich sits at around 400 m in the Limmat valley between the Zürichberg and Uetliberg ridges, and its mild, moist temperate climate gives a long, clearly staged pollen year. Hazel and alder can start as early as January along the Limmat and Sihl riverbanks, and a warm föhn spell pushing over the Alps often triggers them abruptly. Ash and birch dominate from late March into May; birch is the heaviest allergen of the year for many people here, planted widely in parks and along residential streets and abundant on the wooded slopes of the Zürichberg, Käferberg and Adlisberg. Beech, oak and hornbeam follow in the Sihlwald and on Uetliberg. Grasses take over from May, with the meadows of the Allmend Brunau, Zürichhorn, Josefwiese and the open slopes above Witikon among the worst spots, running through July and lingering later at altitude. Mugwort adds a late-summer note. Ragweed is legally controlled in Switzerland, so local levels stay low, though small amounts can drift in from the south or west in late summer.

• Check the MeteoSwiss pollen bulletin before planning a walk on the Uetliberg or Zürichberg, since wooded ridges carry far more birch and beech pollen in April than the lakeside promenades.
• Keep windows shut on warm, dry föhn days, when southerly air can raise counts sharply and bring the tree season forward by days.
