Pollen Season in Bordeaux

Bordeaux's mild, damp Atlantic climate gives it a long pollen calendar with few hard frosts to delay it. Hazel and alder can start releasing in January along the Garonne's wooded banks, followed by ash and cypress-family pollen in February and March. The city's defining spring allergen is plane tree, planted in long rows on the Esplanade des Quinconces, the Allées de Tourny and the quays, which sheds pollen and irritant leaf hairs through late March and April. Birch is present in parks and gardens but is a smaller player than in northern France, tailing off by late April, while oak peaks around the same time. In April and May the vast maritime pine forest of the Landes, just south of the city, can coat cars and terraces in yellow dust; it is highly visible but only weakly allergenic. Grasses take over from May and dominate until late July, worst around the open lawns of the Parc Bordelais, the Jardin Public and the Bordeaux-Lac area. Westerly Atlantic winds often help disperse counts, but still, humid settled spells trap pollen over the city.

• If you cycle or walk the Garonne quays in April, rinse your hair and change your top afterwards — plane trees there shed both pollen and fine irritant hairs.
• Treat the Parc Bordelais and Jardin Public lawns as high-risk between May and July, especially on mowing days and in the late afternoon when grass counts peak.
• Don't assume the yellow pine dust blowing in from the Landes in spring is what's affecting you — it's rarely the culprit, so ask a pharmacist about identifying your actual trigger.
