Turin sits at the western end of the Po plain, ringed by Alps on three sides, and that bowl shape matters: air stagnates for days on end, so pollen and traffic pollution linger together instead of dispersing. The season opens early, with hazel and alder often airborne in January and cypress through February and March. Plane trees, which line Corso Francia and many of the city's boulevards, shed in late March and April alongside poplar, ash and hornbeam; birch peaks in April and is usually finished by early May. Grasses dominate from late April, peak through May and June, and taper off in late July, with the meadows of Parco della Pellerina, Parco Ruffini and the riverside strips at Parco del Valentino and Parco Colletta among the worst spots. The wooded Collina Torinese across the Po \u2014 hazel, hornbeam, oak and chestnut up towards Superga \u2014 adds its own load. Mugwort and ragweed appear in late summer, though less intensely than in the Milan\u2013Varese belt. Olive pollen is not a factor this far north. F\u00f6hn winds off the Alps can clear the haze but drive sharp spikes.

• On stagnant, windless days in the Turin basin, pollen sits at street level with traffic exhaust, so favour early morning or after rain for outdoor exercise.
• When the f\u00f6hn blows down from the Alpine valleys in spring, expect a sudden jump in tree pollen even if the sky looks clean.
• Walks along the Po at Valentino or up into the Collina Torinese are at their worst from April to June \u2014 shift them to late summer, and rinse hair and change clothes when you get home.
