Marseille's pollen calendar is Mediterranean rather than northern: mild wet winters and a hot, dry summer that shuts the grass season down early. The year opens with cypress and other Cupressaceae, which pollinate from January into March and are the single biggest cause of winter hay fever across Provence — ornamental cypress hedges and windbreaks in the surrounding countryside make this unavoidable. The plane trees lining La Canebière, the Prado and Parc Longchamp release pollen in late March and April, often alongside their irritating leaf hairs. May and June bring olive from the groves inland and around Aubagne, together with grasses, which fade quickly once the drought sets in. Pellitory-of-the-wall (Parietaria), rooted in old walls, calanque paths and neglected corners of the Panier and Noailles, has an exceptionally long season from spring well into autumn. Aleppo pine coats cars in yellow dust in April but rarely causes true allergy. The mistral, funnelling down the Rhône valley, dries the air and lifts pollen high, so counts often spike on bright, blustery days rather than still ones.

• Treat clear, windy mistral days as high-risk and keep windows shut during the afternoon, airing rooms instead in the calm early morning or after rain.
• If you garden, avoid clipping cypress or thuja hedges yourself between January and March, when they shed the most pollen.
• Walks in the Calanques and the garrigue above Marseilleveyre mean close contact with Parietaria and aromatic scrub, so rinse your hair and change clothes when you get home, and talk to a pharmacist before a long hike if symptoms usually flare.
