Barcelona's Mediterranean climate — mild, damp winters and hot dry summers — produces a long, layered pollen calendar rather than one sharp peak. Cypress and other Cupressaceae open the year, often from January, before the city's defining allergen takes over: the London plane trees that line the Rambla, Passeig de Gràcia, Gran Via and countless carrers. Their pollen floods the streets over a few intense weeks in late March and early April, and the fine hairs shed from the leaves and seed balls add a mechanical irritation on top. Overlapping this, and running far longer, is Parietaria (pellitory-of-the-wall), which colonises old masonry throughout Ciutat Vella, the Gothic Quarter and the slopes of Montjuïc, and can release pollen from early spring into autumn. Grasses peak in May and June, joined by olive from surrounding ornamental plantings and Catalan groves. Late summer brings Amaranthaceae from dry, disturbed ground and the Llobregat delta. Pine from Collserola is abundant but rarely a true allergen. The afternoon sea breeze pushes coastal air inland, while nocturnal drainage winds carry Collserola's tree pollen down into the city.

• Plan walks along plane-lined avenues like Passeig de Gràcia and the Rambla for after rain in late March and early April, when the pollen and leaf hairs have been washed out of the air.
• If your symptoms persist through summer and autumn rather than stopping in June, mention Parietaria to your doctor or pharmacist — it grows in walls all over Ciutat Vella and Montjuïc and has an unusually long season here.
• Ventilate your flat early in the morning before the afternoon sea breeze and the day's thermal mixing lift pollen through the streets, and keep windows shut on hot, dry, breezy spring afternoons.
