Porto's maritime climate — mild, wet winters and cool, humid summers moderated by the Atlantic — spreads the pollen season out and softens its peaks compared with inland or southern Portugal. Cupressaceae and mimosa (Acacia dealbata, naturalised across the hillsides of the Minho and Douro) get things moving from January into March. Spring belongs to the trees: oak, plane and, above all, maritime pine, whose plantations ring the city and coat cars and windowsills in yellow dust from March to May — conspicuous, though less troublesome than its volume suggests. Grasses drive the hardest weeks, roughly late April through June, easing by mid-July as the summer dries out. Olive flowers in May and June but matters far less here than in the Alentejo or Andalusia. Pellitory (Parietaria), plantain and dock add a long, low background, and eucalyptus plantations flower without causing much trouble. The open meadows of Parque da Cidade, Quinta do Covelo, Parque de Serralves and the grassy Douro and Gaia riverbanks are the local hotspots; plane trees line the Cordoaria and the older avenues.

• Save Parque da Cidade and the riverside for after Atlantic rain or for the damp early morning, and avoid its open lawns on dry, breezy afternoons in May and June.
• Don't assume the yellow pine dust on your car in April is what's bothering you — grass pollen peaks at the same time and is the more likely culprit, so check the daily grass figure rather than the visible film.
• Day trips inland to the Douro valley or the Minho countryside can mean far higher grass and oak counts than the coast, so plan medication with your pharmacist before you travel rather than after.
